As with any company, a wealth of resources should be available to enable team members to achieve their full potential. All of these reviews are then consolidated into a dashboard and shared directly with the team member in the spirit of transparency. With this input, the team member then sets their own individual action items. Michelle Labbe, VP of People, describes why our cultural assessment is an essential step in determining the viability of prospective candidates. Michelle also offers key advice on how to adjust to and thrive in a remote work environment, and how a remote environment can allow for more personal connections. Think carefully about your company infrastructure/policies and fully commit to remote-friendly practices. Don’t just dip your toes in without setting up the right infrastructure. Cases like this happen very rarely here, largely because we invest in figuring out how to hire people where this isn’t an issue.
What is your time off policy for remote workers?
The tool’s functionality gives us confidence that our unlimited DTO policy will be responsibly managed by all our team members. Lessonly is our learning management system that we use for all our training courses. We use this system as it enables the kind of self-directed onboarding necessary for a remote workforce. In addition, it is incredibly adaptable and customizable, allowing managers to create their own learning paths for specific roles and disciplines. The system also allows testing gates that validate active participation and comprehension of the subject matter. On the Top Team platform, every team member has a profile with their title, team, managers, the length of time at the company, as well as a self-written bio.
There is a candidate being evaluated who matches your qualifications, and we will notify you upon the completion of the screening process. We actually moved there for a year to work on Toptal after I finished university, and I’ve been going back regularly ever since. Anywhere that has unreliable Internet, although I really haven’t had much of a problem with that in the last few years.
Pros and cons of Toptal
These include communication software such as Slack and Zoom, productivity tools like Miro and Confluence, people operations instruments such as Top Team and Polly, and developer tools such as JIRA and GitHub. For remote organizations, in the absence of physical proximity, it is vital that technology tools empower staff productivity and support teams. Toptal has embraced these tools, harnessing them to build workflows that, from the start, eliminated the need for a physical office. Data security is vital in a remote environment where a company does not control where team members conduct their work. To support internal data protection efforts, our team members have the minimum number of permissions necessary to do their jobs.
Over time, the number of open channels may inflate, resulting in a confusing and cluttered interface. To prevent this, Toptal has created its own structure for categorizing channels. Creating a structure and shared nomenclature for Slack channels helps team members navigate the organization easily and shortens the ramp-up period for new team members. Lastly, we provide remote support through Zoom video conferencing, often using the tool’s remote control desktop feature to diagnose issues while on a call. This approach minimizes the number of tools team members need and any jumping between applications.

The biggest fear is definitely running into a situation where you need something from someone, but that person isn’t available or is unresponsive. This obviously applies to cases in which something has happened and we need to put together a response very rapidly, but it’s relevant to all of our ongoing initiatives as well. Our teams are very cross-functional and collaborative, and we try to move very fast on projects. A key person going unresponsive when their expertise is needed can slow things down considerably.
Prepaid 3G was very expensive, but the time zone was the real problem. It’s 19 hours ahead of San Francisco, so collaborating with people in California means waking up at 3AM, and your Saturdays/Mondays are complicated because your colleagues expect you to be working. When you see all these other people around you at the company and they’re doing awesome things, I think your culture builds itself. Being remote has allowed us to build our culture in these extremely unique, fun ways that would not have been possible under a different company model.
Furthermore, we have taken time to interview several of our leadership team members for this Playbook and have included them throughout different sections. These podcasts provide you an inside look directly from the team members who work at Toptal. The COVID-19 pandemic circling the world transformed the gradual advance of remote work into a stampede, compelling millions of people to abandon the office and go home. From Google, Apple, and Microsoft to Chevron, AT&T, and Spotify, the list of companies embracing remote grew and grew. We enforce a Role-based Access Control policy over users and information resources and control access based upon job classification, function, and team membership. We can verify user legitimacy by implementing authentication mechanisms in conjunction with unique IDs. The default access level for any new account is set to “deny all,” and granting access level must be approved. Roles are frequently audited user-to-role and role-to-user to ensure that all users are accounted for at the proper permission level. Additionally, accounts created in third-party systems that contain company data are linked to a user’s email account.

I've never interacted with someone so off their rocker as the CEO. I was attracted to the business model, the remote environment and the pay was okay but the insane way this company is run I would think twice if I could go back. Given Toptal’s per-week payment structure, two meetings a week gives the client enough time to express concerns about the project before they feel cheated out of a weekly rate. Just having one meeting a week could mean that the client is unhappy about the quality of work, and the developer has no time to adjust the deliverables. (That’s part of the appeal!) Sometimes you’re brought into an existing team of developers purely as staff augmentation.
It might seem like a challenge to get a sense of the overall mood and collective happiness of the company when everyone is remote, though in reality, it is quite simple. At Toptal, we have created ways for teams to continuously give and get feedback, allowing us to know each team member’s eNPS and individual happiness scores. It is an undisputed fact that a well-defined and meticulously cultivated culture is a core component to the long-term success of a company. This has been validated in surveys conducted with CEOs and researched by the top business schools in the world.
